Martedì 12 ottobre, all'una di notte, la Pensione Aurora dormiva. Tommi era al banco, come ogni notte. Ma non leggeva. Contava.
Venerdì. Mancavano tre giorni. Venerdì mattina prendeva il treno per il lago d'Orta. Clara era lì da dieci giorni, nella villa della residenza artistica. Si sentivano ogni sera. Lei gli mandava le foto del lago, e ogni foto era più bella della precedente.
Quella sera non aveva chiamato. « Stanotte esco a fotografare, » aveva scritto alle dieci. « C'è la nebbia giusta. »
All'una e dodici il telefono ha vibrato sul banco.
Una foto. Da Clara.
Tommi l'ha aperta. Era scura, grigia, piena di nebbia. Poi è arrivato un messaggio. Due parole.
« Tommi, guarda »
Senza punto. Senza niente.
Tommi ha guardato la foto. Poi ha chiamato Clara. Il telefono ha squillato una volta. Poi una voce registrata: « Il telefono della persona chiamata è spento o non raggiungibile. »
Ha richiamato. Ancora. Dieci volte. Sempre la stessa voce.
Tommi si è alzato. Ha camminato davanti al banco, avanti e indietro. Clara non spegneva mai il telefono di notte. Mai. Di notte lavorava. Di notte fotografava. Il telefono era la sua torcia, il suo orologio, la sua mappa.
Ha scritto: « Clara? Tutto bene? Rispondi. »
Una spunta grigia. Il messaggio non arrivava.
Ha guardato di nuovo la foto. E questa volta ha visto quello che Clara voleva mostrargli.
Ha cominciato a preoccuparsi davvero.
